Polaris Acquires GEM Electric Vehicles from Chrysler

Provides future growth opportunities within the low-emission small vehicle market

ATHENS, OHIO–April 25, 2011 — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:  PII) today announced an agreement to acquire Global Electric Motorcars LLC (GEM), a wholly owned Fargo, N.D. based subsidiary of Chrysler Group LLC and manufacturer of premium electric-powered vehicles.  GEM is the recognized leader within the low-speed vehicle market, with a well-respected brand and approximately $30 million in sales during the 2010 calendar year.  Since the company was established in 1998, they have placed over 45,000 electric-powered vehicles on the road worldwide.  GEM has developed business-to-business sales expertise within the fleet and government vehicle markets, and has created a competitive advantage with core competencies in make-to-order vehicle fulfillment and mobile service support.

“GEM provides Polaris with an established position in the low-emission small vehicle market and supports Polaris’ strategy of penetrating on-road market segments poised for growth,” said Scott Wine, Polaris chief executive officer. “We are excited about the outlook for growth within this market space, and are looking forward to developing even stronger growth prospects for the GEM business.”

“Our vision is to accelerate profitable sales growth for GEM, by combining Polaris’ strength in new product innovation with the most-recognized brand in the low speed vehicle market space,” said Mike Jonikas, Vice President of the On-Road Vehicle Division.  “These new product efforts for GEM will be supported by an expanded distribution presence within select domestic and international markets.”

The agreement to acquire GEM will officially close within the next 60 days once Polaris secures the required state sales certifications to sell GEM products.  During this interim period, since Polaris will not yet have officially acquired GEM, operations will proceed as usual and Polaris will continue to learn and understand the GEM business through information exchange.  Following this interim period, Polaris will be in a position to outline specific plans for the GEM business.

Polaris Ranger RZR 4 Awarded "UTV of the Year"

Polaris RZR 4 Crowned “UTV of the Year”

1-10-11, ATHENS, OHIO – The Polaris RZR 4 was named “UTV of the Year” in a contest hosted by UTVUnderground.com & UTVGuide.net, and sponsored by Black Rhino Performance. The industry’s first four seat sport UTV beat out twelve other UTVs to claim top honors in the first ever UTV of the Year contest.

This vote really goes to show that UTVs are really family-based vehicles and that Polaris really hit a home run when they introduced the RZR 4 just last year.

Participants in the voting on UTVUnderground.com were all in the running for some great prizes from Black Rhino Performance.

“Polaris saw a market for a multi-passenger Sport vehicle at a significantly lower price than an expensive Sand Car or Rail,” said Eric Nault, product manager for RANGER RZR 4. “The RANGER RZR 4 fills that need for a Sport Side-by-Side experience for multiple passengers.” The RANGER RZR 4 has all the performance and attributes of the RANGER RZR family and the ability to carry four people. With a powerful 800cc High Output Twin EFI engine, the RANGER RZR 4 has a class-leading power-to-weight ratio and strong acceleration. Its 60-inch/152.4cm width coupled with RANGER RZR’s patented design that places the engine behind the back seat for the lowest center of gravity, makes the RANGER RZR 4 more agile than most competitive two-seat Side-by-Sides. At 1,255 lbs/569.3 kg., it’s also lighter than many two-passenger vehicles.

“Customer response to the RANGER RZR 4 is great,” said Jeff Wood, President of Don Wood Polaris, Athens, Ohio. “The 4-seater lets everyone go along for the fun, and the performance is impressive because of the RANGER RZR 4′s light weight.”

Polaris Ranger RZR 4 Features:

  • 800 Twin Cylinder High Output EFI Engine
  • Industry-Leading 12 in. (30.5 cm.) Long-Travel Suspension
  • Fox Podium X® 2.0 Racing Shocks with Piggyback Reservoirs
  • Rolled Independent Rear Suspension (IRS)
  • Maxxis® Bighorn® 26 in. Radial Tires With 12 in. Aluminum Rims
  • Top Speed – 61 mph

Jagged X Back in Action at Best in the Desert’s Blue Water Grand Prix

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
Minneapolis, May 18, 2010– Just three short weeks since the catastrophic fire at the Silver State 300 race where the Jagged X / Polaris racing 1919 race car literally burnt to the ground, the team rebounded to a second place finish in the Best in the Desert Blue Water Grand Prix, in Parker, Arizona.

Jagged X raced their Project X Monster Rock RANGER RZR as an interim race car. While the car had a good deal of the required structure in place it still required some long nights and some hard work to ready transform the purpose-built rock crawler into a competitive desert racer.

The Parker race was problem-free from flag to flag. This is the team’s only race with a full field land rush start where they came up a bit short and fell into the pack around sixth. After two laps, Brandon Schueler and co-pilot Mike West battled their way into the second place position but could not quite reel in the first place runner before time ran out.

With the points chase for the BITD championship very tight, Jagged X looks toward August and the famed “Vegas to Reno” to kick off the second half of the season.

Jeff Wood, President of Don Wood Polaris, supports the Jagged X project that is sponsored by Polaris Industries, Mountain States Contracting, Elka Suspension, CR Designs, S&S Off Road, Simpson Products, ATL Fuel Systems, Tire Balls, MTA, Vision X Off Road, OMF Performance, Affordable Powder Coat, Robby Gordon Off Road, Trophy Engineering, Fullbore Innovations.

Rath Racing’s Casey Martin Takes Polaris to Podium at Ballance MX Park

Polaris Takes Rath Racing to Podium

Minneapolis, April 20, 2010 – Rath Racing is on a roll! The weekend after Daryl Rath and his Polaris Sportsman 850 XP EPS took the “4×4 Open” points lead in GNCC, Casey Martin and his Outlaw 450 hit the podium with a second place overall in the “Pro Am Production” class, at the AMA National MX series’ Ballance Moto X, at Bowling Green, Kentucky. Don Wood Polaris pledges its continued support of Polaris racing programs.

As Casey stood on the podium he stated, “I knew this is where we would get this bike, it has been great working with Rath Racing and Polaris in putting together a winning program. Every weekend I feel better and faster on this Outlaw and I am looking forward to being up here again. I also want to thank all the sponsors behind us that have put in the effort with their support to get us here.”

Martin’s weekend showed promise from the beginning, where he laid down some nice lap times and qualifying Motos. The Pro Am Production classes are stacked with more than double the riders contending in the Pro Class and with time qualifying only putting 18 into the main a event, a LCQ was needed to fill the gate. Martin’s time in his practice session moved him into the main events.

He piloted his Polaris Outlaw off the gate and into the mix of front runners during Moto 1, running a solid Moto he clicked off laps to finish in the third spot. Hoping for a repeat of Moto 1 Martin had a good gate pick and once again came out in the top five, he continued to work his way forward and finished with another third place putting him 3-3 for the day and sending him to the podium on the second step.

“Polaris is really excited about the first Pro Am MX podium of the year,” said Donna Beadle, race team manager for Polaris Racing. “Casey has been working hard to dial in his Outlaw 450 and this is just the beginning of what we feel will be a successful racing year for the team.”
